Abstract

This article proposes a new classification of verbs in the modern Slovak language. This classification is based on a system of features that allows to fully characterise the types of stems that appear in a paradigm of any Slovak verb. These features include stem truncation, presence or absence of a suffix or a thematic vowel, and alternation of the root’s final consonant. The proposed classification allows to determine the verb type and produce verb forms without using a dictionary. This classification has a high degree of what is commonly called ‘comparability’. That is, it can be represented as a modification of verb types in the Old Church Slavonic. The article also provides an overview of other classifications with a discussion of their advantages and disadvantages, as well as a comparative analysis of the new classification and the ones previously known.
